LEAP: IMPROVING ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT IN KENYA

LEAP (the ‘Lending for Education in Africa Partnership’) is a social lending fund that provides affordable finance to youth from low and middle-income backgrounds in East Africa.

They are pursuing their higher education and cannot fully cover the cost of their higher education through conventional loans, bursaries, scholarships or other means. In addition to its tailor-made loans, LEAP also offers its LEAP Fellows career readiness and financial literacy training, and forges partnerships to create pathways to gainful employment for its supported students.

In 2017, inHive was brought on as a strategic partner to support the LEAP Programme, a consortium managed by Volta Capital. Our work includes advising on the student support programmatic activities and the alumni network.

LEAP has been active since late 2017 and has over 500 Fellows enrolled in its programme as of September 2019. It is looking to expand its offering across the higher education and vocational training sectors in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.
